I may never see a timber wolf in the wild, but it is important for me to know they are around!

…. But before he could cut the strings, it happened. It was his own fault or, rather, his mistake. He should not have built the fire under a spruce tree…… It grew like an avalanche, and it descended without warning upon the man and the fire, and the fire was blotted out! Where it had burned was a mantle of fresh and disordered snow….

In times past first peoples paid much attention to the sky; their very existence depended on living in harmony with nature and the cycle of the seasons. Their reverence for the sky is reflected in their legends, which included figures like Father Sky, Thunder Man, Rainmaker or Grandmother Moon

The afternoon wore on, and with awe, born of the White Silence, the voiceless travellers bent to their work.
Nature has many tricks wherewith she convinces man of his finity - the ceaseless flow of the tides, the fury of the storm, the shock of an earthquake, the long roll of heaven's artillery - but the most tremendous , the most stupefying of all, is the passive phase of the White Silence

…..And Buck ran with them, side by side with the wild brother,……..And there may well end the story of Buck. The years were not many when the Yeehats noted a change in the breed of timber wolfs……But more remarkable… the Yeehats tell of a Ghost Dog that runs at the head of the pack…..

The magnetism of trail life in the North is made up of many things. It is the crack of a spruce tree splitting in the frigid temperature. It is the flickering of candlelight that cheerfully illuminates a canvas shelter. It is the flutter of wings when a flock of ptarmigan rise from an approaching dog team. It is the silent dance of the aurora as it flits across the skies. It is the physical exhilaration of meeting each day's challenge and mastering it. It is the crunch of snowshoes and the rasp of a toboggan as it grates an ice hummock. It is the gurgle of the raven as he hops into camp looking for a handout. It is the sibilant sound of ice expanding and contracting on a nearby creek. It is the sight of a band of caribou wandering in the morning mists. It is the camaraderie of men helping one another to achieve a common goal. It is the refreshing freedom of the trail.
